The good weather is almost here and we have been searching every corner of the internet to find the best sustainable swimwear to wear this summer and keep for a lifetime.
Temperatures are rising, the infection rate is going down all over Europe, and it’s finally time to think about a well-deserved holiday at the seaside.
After a year in our pyjamas, we want to make sure we dress up for absolutely everything – including the beach. But do you know what your favourite swimsuits are made of? Unfortunately, most of them will be created with nylon and polyester – in simpler words, derivates of plastic.
As we all know, plastic is our planet’s number one enemy. Not only these kinds of materials do not biodegrade, but they are incredibly resource-consuming to make.
To make sure you don’t contribute to the huge plastic pollution problem, try to avoid any product that has been made with virgin materials derived from plastic. Many brands are now using yarns created from recycled plastic (like fishing nets or plastic bottles) – the most popular one being Econyl – and it’s very easy to find a sustainably made swimsuit that will look fantastic while not contributing to plastic pollution.
Unfortunately, the problem of microplastics is still present, even when using recycled materials. When washed, the recycled yarn releases the same microplastics found in virgin materials, making this option a better one but not the best one on the market.
You can use things like a Guppyfriend washing bag to capture the microplastics released by your clothes, but the easiest option is to buy sustainable swimwear that is made using natural materials.
Hemp, cotton and bamboo are only some of the natural materials used to produce yarns for sustainable swimwear, and they are just as comfortable and beautiful as the materials traditionally used in the industry.
Thinking about the materials is essential, but care is just as crucial when it comes to clothes. Ensuring that your sustainable swimwear lasts for years is the best thing you can do for the planet.
When buying, make sure you choose prints, colours and shapes that you will want to wear over and over again. Wash your sustainable swimwear by hand and with a delicate natural soap and never use the drier.
Now that you know what to pay attention to, we selected our favourite sustainable swimwear brand to look incredible this summer while keeping the planet safe.
