Conscious travel: 4 National Reserves to explore in Lithuania

Avoiding crowds and tourist traps at all costs is going to be the new golden rule of travel. Instead of visiting Europe’s most famous areas, it’s time to give Lithuania the attention it deserves.

Now like never before, we feel the need to escape cities and crowds and immerse ourselves in the peace that only nature can provide. The European continent is full of unique places to visit but, unfortunately, most travellers tend to gravitate towards the usual, popular spots, usually in Italy, France or Germany. There is a lot more than the Black Forest to explore in Europe and Lithuania is one of the most beautiful, yet overlooked, destinations we have at our doorsteps.

If you need a break to dive into nature, here are four gorgeous national reserves to visit in Lithuania.

Čepkeliai Reserve

Čepkeliai Wilderness is tucked in the Dzūkija National Park, located in the south-eastern corner of Lithuania, at the border with Belarus. This ecological complex represents one of the most valuable ecosystems of wetlands and forest in the country.

The pine forest of Čepkeliai is home to wolves, lynx and more than 4 000 other species of animals and plants and it’s a real oasis for bees and bumblebees. After a magical walk in the woods, it’s possible to hike to an observation tower to enjoy some bird-watching and contemplate the glorious nature all around.

Kamanai Reserve

If you are after a wilder experience, Kamanai Reserve is the place to visit. This natural heaven offers a fantastic educational trail and it can only be visited with a guide, the only way the ecosystem can be protected.

A 30-meters tall observation tower is located next to the trail – the perfect spot to observe the incredible fauna that lives undisturbed in this perfectly kept natural reserve.

Viešvilė Nature Reserve

Another incredible natural reserve, Viešvilė boasts lakes, rivers, marshes and forests only accessible with a guide. After the hike, the visitor centre invites all guests to learn more about the wonderful nature around and its inhabitants through organised interactive experiences.

If you are particularly interested in birds, Viešvilė Nature Reserve is known for its wood grouses nursery, where you can observe this usually reclusive birds from up close.

Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve

The oldest protected area in Lithuania, since 1937, Žuvintas is a priceless 60,000 hectares of protected land that includes lakes, wetlands, mires, peat bogs, and forests.

Home to 2000 species of animals, including more than 240 species of birds – some of which are considered endangered – this reserve attracts scientists and bird-watchers alike. Protected by UNESCO, this reserve should be on top of any nature enthusiast list.
