7 ways to save water at home

Limiting our water consumption is easier than it seems. For World Water Day, we gathered seven tips to help you use less water in your daily life.

Even in the most challenging situations – like a global pandemic, for example – we never think about water as something that we will ever long for or that we have to worry about. Yet, 2.2 billion people are living without access to safe water.

Since 1993, World Water Day has been raising awareness on the value of water – and clean water for all – and this year, the UN-Water theme is valuing water.

You don’t have to change your life entirely – and yes, you can still take a relaxing bath when you feel like you need one – but there are a few things that we can do to save water at home and to do our daily good deed for the planet.

Turn off the taps

The most basic of all the tips about saving water and yet, many people don’t do it. Turning off the tap when you wash your teeth, when cleaning or when washing dishes, can make a massive difference in your water consumption. It’s a habit that you will have to acquire and it takes time to get used to do it, but it’s the most effective tip to save water at home.

Cut down your meat consumption

You have heard it all before; eating a lot of animal products is bad for the planet. Although switching to a plant-based diet helps, you don’t need to go fully vegan do help the cause. Try to have meat-free days and limit your consumption of dairy – it will be a slight change in your lifestyle but it will make a big difference for the planet.

Take shorter showers

We are not here to say that you should only have super short showers; we know that some people only self-care is to take a bath once in a while, and if that’s what you need to feel good, you should keep on doing. If you do have a bath once a month – or once a week – on the other days, think about having shorter showers to balance your water consumption.

Don’t overwater your garden

It sounds silly, but most people overwater their gardens and their plants. Loans and plants don’t always need the amount of water we think they do, so it’s good to do some research and make sure that you don’t overdo it with the water. The plants will be happier too!

Use every drop of water

We waste a lot of water without even realising it. Our plants, for example, don’t need filtered water to survive. Next time it rains, think about saving rainwater and keeping it to water your plants. The same thing can be said about the water used to clean fruits and vegetables: we use a lot of water to wash our food daily, why not keeping it and use it to grow more of it!

These tips are all easy to implement in your daily life but can make an incredible difference in the long run.
